New York City! The Big Apple. The city that never sleeps! The city that has been on your bucket list forever. Hi cheery friends, in this blog I will give you 7 reasons why you should make the trip to the Big Apple. As someone who has had the privilege of visiting the city a couple of times, I can’t help but write down a few praises for a place that feels like home to me. So without further ado, let’s dive right in to reasons to visit nyc:
- The Vibrant Energy
When I first came to the state of NJ many years ago, I was hit with a strong wave of culture shock and loneliness . I had left Nairobi , Kenya to pursue higher education in the United States. The first few months were brutal, and I wondered how I would ever get used to living this new way of life. Then, a family member took me to visit new York city; and the rest is history.During this visit, I felt an energy that felt familiar , contagious and welcoming. There was magic and excitement in the air, and the people in this city seemed to have some extra life in them compared to NJ lol. The only thing I made sure to do after we got back was to check the distance between NJ and NYC when I got home. I now visit this city often, to feel that amazing energy.
2. New York City is rich with the most iconic landmarks. Times Square is one of the most well known parts of the city with its gigantic billboards and hoards of people walking in every direction . The Statue of Liberty , is the first landmark I visited, and this very popular green lady was speaking to me and saying, you will be just fine here. Then we have the Empire State Building which offers unbelievable views that make you feel like you are on top of the world.
3. New York City is diverse with people from all corners of the globe calling it home, bringing with them rich cultures, traditions and cuisines. It feels good to see people from other international backgrounds because I know we have similar experiences. Chinatown, Little Italy and Harlem is like visiting the entire world without ever leaving the city. This melting pot is what makes new York city special and memorable.
4. Arts and Entertainment Scene
If you are into arts, then NYC is going to deliver. Broadway is alive with breathtaking shows like The Lion King, the best selling musical of all time. How about Aladdin and his magic carpet or how about reliving the life and times of the King of Pop – MJ! Then you have the Metropolitan Museum of Art which houses a vast array of art pieces. Street performers in subway stations, clubs in the village, Brooklyn venues and more. Art and music help keep the pulse of new York city alive.
5. Cuisines Galore
New York City is buzzing with cuisines from around the world, thanks to the diverse people who live here. From Michelin reviewed restaurants to humble food trucks, the culinary scene here has to be seen to be believed. You can get a Turkish kebab right on the street sidewalk. NYC is also known for it’s numerous slice pizza joints and just so you know, here, people don’t judge or care whether you eat from a 5 star restaurant or eat an entire pizza pie while walking.
6. Green City
Despite NYC being a concrete jungle, the place boasts beautiful green spaces like the famous Central Park, with its spacious lawns, lakes and hidden trails. A haven in the midst of the hustle and bustle of this major metropolitan. Prospect park in Brooklyn and the High Line, a raised park built on an old railway line offers a unique way to enjoy peace and tranquility while breathing in visions of the past. These green spaces are ideal for a quick recharge.
7. Tough Spirit
New Yorkers are not to be played with. They are known for their resilience and no nonsense approach to life. Also, they are strangely welcoming, and offer a sense of community to everyone, even tourists. The city stands tall despite the awful events of 9/11, and other not widely known occurrences that have created tough skinned New Yorkers.
So NYC is really special and where anything can happen. Every part of this great city has a story to tell and holds adventure. With each visit, NYC has shown me a different side, and will leave a mark on your soul, that’s for sure. So get ready for the adventure, get your bags, comfy shoes and fall in love with the city that never sleeps. You will never forget it!
