In this blog I am diving deep into why I’m obsessed with tulle skirts, a type of bottom that is made up of layers of tulle fabric. But first, what exactly is tulle? So back in 17th century France, fashionistas in royalty, dancers and the elite wore tulle fabric outfits as a symbol of status, to show refinement and class. Marie Antoinette comes to my mind, and was known to float around in huge gowns adorned in delicate layers of tulle. She pissed off French society of that time with her overspending and lavish lifestyle. She probably spent a fortune on tulle skirts and dresses and I don’t blame her one bit. Even the performances at Moulin Rouge were incomplete without tulle skirts, a staple of French dance culture that added a touch of grace to every dance move. We can credit Jean-Baptiste Jolly with coming up with the fabric. He weaved silk and cotton to create the delicate and flowy fabric known as tulle, named after the French town where it originated from.
This same material is still commonly used to make bridal gowns, ballet tutus and veils. Tulle skirts come in various lengths, that is minis to maxis, as well as different waist bands types like high waist or stretch. So my fascination with tulle skirts stems from my childhood, and the outfits I was required to wear on Sundays and Christmas days. These were extra special days, and wearing pants was frowned upon , and a big no -no. See, I grew up in Nairobi, Kenya in the Catholic faith, and went to a high school of the same denomination so, wearing skirts was the order of the day. At home, I found myself wearing dresses with huge balloon skirts in soft and flowy fabric on those “special days”. I guess my childhood fashion history has caught up with me lol. Anyway, tulle skirts transport me back to my childhood , to innocence and a dream like state. When I wear one, I feel like I’m floating with layers of light fabric being the wind that keeps me up, you know like balloons. Weird , I know! - There is something about a tulle skirt that gives me added confidence. When I wear one, I feel so happy, I smile brighter and are in a great mood as I walk around in my own bubble. Taking pictures is extra fun , and I feel like with every swish and twirl, magic is released from the skirt which causes me to elevate and I become this super hero hehe.
2. Tulle skirts are truly magical , and there is no denying that these skirts are associated with happy moments and good times. I feel like a princess when wearing a tulle skirt , I get to star in my own story of fabulousness , that is, I choose when and where, I get to be extra, and don’t need to be cast in some movie or book to be considered a princess, a tulle skirt allows me to instantly do that without confirmation.
3. Tulle skirts are easy to style, you can dress them up, dress them down and you will look fantastic. They are not just for special occasions; they can be worn as an everyday outfit. For a casual look, you can pair a tulle skirt with a solid or graphic tee. Tuck in the top to help define your waist and balance out the volume of the skirt. Complete with a pair of sneakers for an effortless look that works for brunch or running errands. For a more polished look, pair the tulle skirt with a fitted striped top. Add a sash belt in black to balance out the colors and for a bold look. The look below extra chic when paired with a leather jacket, it is a look that gives an edgy vibe for a laid back look. Styling a tulle skirt is about expressing your unique personality and showing off your inner fashionista. Experiment , have fun and use the mirror to come up with a great outfit.
4. I know I am not the only one who feels like I am on a cloud when wearing a tulle skirt outfit. The interesting thing is, I tend to wear them when I am in a good mood , so for me it is a way of expressing how I feel on the inside. Obviously the color of the tulle skirt matters to me. I love how playful and feminine pink tulle skirts are and they instantly scream “cute” and adorable.
5. I love the look and feeling I get when wearing a tulle skirt. For me, its not about impressing others but about treating myself and feeling extraordinary. 6. Let’s talk about how comfy I am when wearing a tulle skirt. The layers of light fabric, and the elastic waist band are easy the body and hide flaws and all. I may have a food baby after indulging in brunch, but a tulle skirt will hide it well while I look chic and trendy.
7. Tulle skirts are an all season wardrobe staple, not just warm weather. Throw on some tights and boots in fall and winter months . When picking a jacket for this look, make sure its either of trench coat length or it reaches waist level. Any other length will throw off the outfit
8. Going to a party and not sure what to wear? Throw on a tulle skirt, it works for dinner dates, weddings, birthday parties, baby showers and more. The tulle skirt is a party in of its own so it is the best piece to wear on these special occasions.
9. But perhaps the most magical thing about tulle skirts is the way they make others around you feel. I get so many compliments when I wear tulle skirts that it can be overwhelming lol. I feel it’s because the skirt reminds people of their own childhoods, a fantasy land somewhere where there is only happiness and joy .
10. Most women can find tulle skirts that fit into their personalities regardless of their age and body type. Doesnt matter whether you are into mini skirts, midi skirts or maxi skirts, there is a tulle skirt out there for you. Also, they are available in all kinds of color , so you get to pick the hue that fits your mood.
